Release Manager
Cross-platform desktop app for the R&D team: release tracks, version bumps, patch notes, guarded local branch interactions and its own update delivery.
02
Context & challenge
A family of related industrial applications introduces release-coordination problems: different devices can require different app versions, update tracks and supporting services. Manual publishing and per-device maintenance make delivery inconsistent and error-prone.
03
Approach
Three separate tools with distinct responsibilities: one for publishing, one for installing on devices and one for selecting applications on demo panels.
04
My role
I designed and built all three tools and the related CI workflows.
05
What was delivered
Web App Updater
A Node.js/TypeScript service for ARM64 Debian panels. It identifies the relevant application and release track, finds a matching distribution package, handles installation and keeps update status and recovery metadata available.
Web App Launcher
A demo-focused hub for switching between supported machine interfaces. It coordinates which application is presented and aligns required services and update-track configuration, while keeping machine configuration separate.
UTEST Release Manager
A cross-platform Electron desktop app for preparing and triggering releases: release tracks, version-bump controls, patch notes, GitHub Actions integration, run-status visibility, guarded local branch interactions and self-update. Ships as .deb (Linux), NSIS installer (Windows) and DMG for Intel/Apple silicon (macOS).
06
Engineering decisions
Typed process boundaries
Electron process isolation with typed main/renderer boundaries and credentials handled through operating-system facilities.
Operational reality first
The updater is designed around industrial touch panels: release-track resolution, Debian packages, systemd services, update visibility and cautious recovery support.
07
Status & outcome
A more coherent release toolchain connecting engineering workflows to the target device fleet, with separate interfaces for publishing, installing and selecting applications.
